"Death by Chocolate" Discovery Networks TLC

Produced at WPBT 2 in Miami, "Death by Chocolate" and it's companion "The Burgermeisters" aired on The Learning Channel for two seasons in Prime Time and on AM Saturdays. Host is C.I.A. Chef Marcel Desaulniers of the Trellis of Williamsburg, VA.
All the sets for the five cooking shows we produced required working appliances, including gas piped in from external tanks and practical sinks and faucets in studios with no existing drains or water. Waste water was collected in holding tanks under the sink, filtered and pumped out. Hot water heaters were also in the center island counter as well as a practical sink and cooktop.

"Sunshine Cuisine" PBS Network

Sunshine Cuisine was carried on 179 television stations nationwide, including the top 25 television viewing markets, for a total of eighty shows. Le Cordon Bleu Chef Jean Pierre required working appliances, including gas piped in from external tanks and practical sinks and faucets in studios with no existing drains or water. Waste water was collected in holding tanks under the sink, filtered and pumped out. Hot water heaters were also in the set for the automatic dish washer and clothes washer for table cloths, aprons and kitchen towels. For finished product shots we used a side set as well as a sweep light table. During my tenure at WPBT, I designed and built sets and props for many cooking shows, some taping side by side in the two studios.

This was a quick design done on one of the first affordable 3d programs for Mac called DesignCad. Working on an old surplus Mac LC with a 16 MHz 68020 processor, a 12" monitor and a black and white printer, I did this in about twenty minutes including a quick splash of color with Dr. Martin's watercolors. Below is a photo of the actual taping in front of the wireframe 3d drawing. The Monitor Wall from Multi Vision fits perfectly into the surround flats with studio audience on Stage Right risers.

As primitive as those drawings were back then, it was clear 3d CAD was a must have application for scenery and prop production. While the show was taping, many remarked on how accurate the simple drawings were.

During the 90's decade at WPBT Miami, I designed and built props, special effects and scenery for hundreds of shows and events, most with budgets of less than $500.
Below is "Songs for Fun" a Pilot done for $100 in materials including painted floor, thanks to a stock of flats and left over paint from other jobs together with bulk price on the 1/4" Luan and 3/4" AC plywood.

Labor cost is kept low with minimalist designs that can be built by interns or utility techs, if necessary. More savings from smart design incorporating existing elements like cyc curtains and other soft goods with colored, border strip lights, behind ground row painted to match floor, making for a rich look without a lot of money. This resourcefulness, earned from my college theater experience and years of work in regional theaters from Miami to West Palm Beach, has served my employers well through the years.
